Sage Doubles Down on Construction Tech with Acquisition of Paperless Environments

The landscape of construction technology is shifting rapidly, and Sage is making it very clear that they intend to lead the charge. In a move that underscores their aggressive expansion strategy, the accounting and business solutions giant recently announced the acquisition of Paperless Environments. Based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Paperless Environments is a long-term partner of Sage and a recognized specialist in accounts payable (AP) automation, document workflows, and subcontractor compliance specifically tailored for the construction industry.

This isn't just a one-off purchase; it’s a strategic pattern. This acquisition marks Sage’s second major construction-related deal in just two months, following their August acquisition of Bangert—a firm known for AI-enabled implementation in construction financial management. By bringing Paperless Environments into the fold, Sage is effectively bridging the gap between back-office financial management and the often chaotic realities of the jobsite.

Why This Matters for the Construction Sector

Construction has historically been an industry plagued by fragmented data and manual paperwork. Sage’s ongoing investment is designed to change that narrative. According to the company, the integration of Paperless Environments will give contractors significantly more control over the information and approval cycles required to keep massive projects moving. The goal is efficiency driven by automation and artificial intelligence, providing a clearer lens through which businesses can view their financial and operational health.

When contractors have real-time data, they can manage risks before they become catastrophes. Sage’s current suite, which includes Sage Intacct Construction, Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate, and Sage 100 Contractor, already handles job costing and financial management. Adding Paperless Environments’ two decades of expertise adds a crucial layer of document management that connects finance teams directly with project managers and field staff.

Connecting the Office to the Jobsite

One of the biggest hurdles in construction is the lag between a receipt being generated in the field and an invoice being paid in the office. Paperless Environments solves this by allowing jobsite teams to submit receipts, images, and forms directly via mobile devices. This means project managers don't have to be chained to a desk to review documents or approve work. Everything moves faster, ensuring subcontractors are paid on time and projects don't stall due to administrative bottlenecks.

Dan Miller, Executive Vice President of Financials and ERP at Sage, pointed out that contractors shouldn't have to act like a human puzzle-solver, trying to piece together information from three different teams. He noted that the Paperless team brings deep expertise that will drastically reduce the manual labor involved in managing the mountain of invoices and compliance documents that every project generates.

Continuity and Global Reach

For existing users of Paperless Environments, the transition looks promising. The company already serves over 1,400 customers across the United States, Canada, and Australia. A key detail of the deal is that Sage will continue to support integrations with non-Sage ERP systems. While many users already know this technology as 'Sage Paperless Construction,' the acquisition allows for a deeper, more native integration into the Sage ecosystem while maintaining its flexibility for the wider market.

Seth Dawson, President and CEO of Paperless Environments, expressed excitement about the move, noting that his team has spent years building technology by listening to how construction teams actually operate. Joining Sage gives them a global platform to scale that experience. As the industry moves toward a more digitized future, this acquisition puts Sage in a powerful position to define how construction firms manage their money and their data for years to come.
