iPhone 17 Takes the Crown: Apple and Samsung Dominate Global Smartphone Sales in Q2 2026

The smartphone landscape in 2026 is seeing a fascinating shift toward the high-end, and the latest data from Counterpoint Research confirms that Apple is still the one to beat. According to the recently released report for the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, the standard iPhone 17 has emerged as the world's best-selling smartphone, capturing a significant 6% share of the total global market. This isn't just a minor victory; it’s a clear signal that Apple’s strategy of blending premium features with accessible models is paying off.

Following closely behind the base model are its more expensive siblings, the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the iPhone 17 Pro, which claimed the second and third spots respectively. This triple-threat performance highlights a growing trend where consumers are increasingly opting for the best hardware available, even as the broader market faces challenges.

The Duopoly Remains Unshaken

When we look at the top 10 best-selling devices, the dominance of the industry's two biggest titans is staggering. Apple and Samsung managed to secure five spots each, effectively locking out any other competitors from the top tier. Together, these ten models accounted for 26% of all smartphone units sold globally during the April-June period.

Interestingly, this high concentration of sales among the top 10 occurred while the overall smartphone market actually shrank by 11%. This divergence suggests that while people might be buying fewer phones overall, they are gravitating toward proven, high-quality models. Industry experts suggest that manufacturers are intentionally focusing on premium lineups to maintain healthy margins, especially as a global RAM shortage continues to impact the supply chain.

Apple's Resilient Growth Strategy

Despite the general market slowdown, Apple managed to grow its unit sales by 5% year-on-year. Karn Chauhan, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint, noted that this growth was fueled by strong performance in key regions. Apple saw significant gains in India, Japan, and the Middle East-Africa region. Perhaps most impressively, sales nearly doubled in South Korea, a market traditionally dominated by local giants, thanks to the massive appeal of the iPhone 17 series.

The standard iPhone 17 remains the bestseller because the gap between it and the Pro models has narrowed significantly. With upgraded specifications that feel truly 'next-gen,' the base model offers incredible value. Meanwhile, the demand for the Pro and Pro Max variants remains sky-high, supported by attractive trade-in programs, aggressive carrier promotions, and flexible financing options that make these premium price tags much easier for consumers to digest.

Don't Count Out the iPhone 17e

Another interesting player in the top 10 is the iPhone 17e. This model has successfully defended its position by offering specific upgrades that consumers actually care about. By adding MagSafe compatibility and increasing base storage capacity without raising the price from the previous year, Apple has created a compelling mid-range option. It remains a powerhouse in the United States and Japan, largely driven by strategic carrier deals.

Samsung: The Android King

On the Android side of the fence, Samsung continues to hold its ground with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which officially took the title of the best-selling Android smartphone for this period. A slightly delayed launch for the S26 series compared to its predecessor meant that a large chunk of sales shifted into Q2, with the Ultra model making up more than half of the series' total volume.

Senior Analyst Harshit Rastogi pointed out that Samsung’s success isn't just about brand loyalty. The Galaxy S26 Ultra features an industry-first privacy-focused display and significantly enhanced AI capabilities that provide a tangible edge over other Android competitors. These features have successfully carved out a niche for users who prioritize security and cutting-edge productivity tools.

The Longevity of the Galaxy A-Series

While the flagships get the headlines, Samsung’s Galaxy A-series remains the backbone of its volume. These entry-level and mid-range devices are popular for a reason: they are affordable, widely available, and now come with the promise of up to six years of software updates. This is a crucial factor in 2026, as the average consumer is holding onto their phone longer than ever before. If a phone is guaranteed to stay secure and updated for over half a decade, it becomes a much more logical investment for the budget-conscious buyer.

As the dust settles on Q2 2026, one thing is clear: the market is polarizing. Consumers are either going for the absolute peak of technology with iPhones and S-series Ultras or choosing long-term reliability with the Galaxy A-series. Did your current smartphone make the cut in this year's top 10?
