Ismail, the Secretary General of Komdigi, recently emphasized that connectivity has evolved. It is no longer viewed merely as a tool for communication. Instead, it has become the bedrock of national productivity, innovation, and competitiveness in an era dominated by AI. According to Ismail, the roadmap must be accelerated because the world is pivoting toward an AI-based economy, and the nation's digital infrastructure must be robust enough to match that demand.

The Spectrum Boost: 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz

One of the primary catalysts for this expansion is the recent auction of the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands. These frequencies are critical 'power boosts' for mobile operators. Previously, many operators had to split their spectrum resources to maintain 4G services while trying to introduce 5G. Now, with these new bands available at more affordable rates, operators have the breathing room to deploy optimal 5G services.

Ismail noted that the government’s role is to provide the necessary space for digital infrastructure investment to grow rapidly. By offering these frequencies at competitive prices, the government is lowering the barrier to entry for widespread deployment, ensuring that the technology doesn't just stay in urban hubs like Jakarta.

Strategic Commitments from Major Players

The push for 5G is not just a government mandate; it’s a collaborative effort with the country’s biggest telecommunications players. Major operators, including Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and XL Axiata, have already committed to a massive expansion. Their goal is to reach 51% national coverage within the next five years. To support this, the government is focusing on regulatory certainty, which is essential for long-term infrastructure investment. This stability allows the industry to not only expand their networks but also develop entirely new digital services that were previously impossible on older tech.

From Bandwidth to Business Solutions

Perhaps the most significant shift is in the business model of telecommunications itself. The era of simply selling bandwidth is coming to an end. Ismail is urging operators to transform into providers of digital solutions. In the new AI-driven landscape, infrastructure must act as a catalyst for strategic sectors like agriculture, mining, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and finance.
